Wildflowers of the United States

Home Journal Family Index - All States Photo Albums News About Privacy

I'm a computer geek by trade, now retired. I started out in the mainframe world when the IBM 360 systems were first announced. Fast-forward nearly 35 years to 2004 when I needed a way to track and quickly reference the wildflowers I had started trying to identify from my recently-renewed interest in photography. I registered "USWildflowers.com", created a small database with some basic information and a photograph, and built a few PHP/MySQL pages to maintain and access that database.

That's where this website stood until 2009. Events of early that year - the "discovery" of a fantastic wildflower site nearby (The Pocket at Pigeon Mountain), acquisition of a decent digital camera, and a desire to start implementing a few changes to the website that had been stewing in my mind - have led to the current state, which is probably a bit different from the state a week ago.

I've added a Blog - "Wildflower Discovery Journal" I call it - where I publish wildflower articles and photographs. The number of species in the database has increased from about 75 at the end of 2008 to 596 now. The site now includes wildflower reference information - websites and books - on a state-by-state basis, and the format and content of the "wildflower detail" pages has been significantly enhanced from when the site contained only 75 wildflower species.

Moving in on retirement, I knew that my retirement budget would not support this website, much less the expense of the photography and travel, so I started adding a few advertisements to generate some revenue. These advertisements hopefully do not detract from the information and photographs on the site, and hopefully they are relevant to the visitors to the site. In 2012 the advertising revenue finally exceeded the annual cost of maintaining the website, and actually started providing some gas money for trips to The Pocket for my status updates. Now that I'm retired, this revenue has been critical to my ability to continue my wildflower hobby, and to publish and enhance USWildflowers.com. Your patronage both to this website and to our advertisers by clicking on the ads to visit their sites is appreciated.

You can't possibly enjoy this site as much as I've enjoyed building it, and photographing and studying the wildflowers presented here, but I do hope you find USWildflowers.com enjoyable and informative.

To support my hobby, some links on these pages may be to Amazon.com, where you can make a purchase. If you do so, I will be paid a small commission. To make these advertisements relevant to you, these services will place cookies on your browser (unless you have configured your browser to reject cookies.) Your continued use of this site implies your consent for this to happen. My intention is not to "sell" anything, but rather to provide resources, information, and enjoyment, and to offset some of the costs involved while doing so - my retirement income does not provide the revenue necessary to keep this site "on the air", so it would shut down without that revenue.
