Roundleaf Catchfly - Silene rotundifolia

Family: Caryophyllaceae - Pink family Genus Common Name: Catchfly Native Status: NativeDicot Perennial Herb
Silene rotundifolia - Roundleaf Catchfly. I originally identified this as Silene virginica - Fire Pink, but S. virginica has narrower petals, and doesn't have the pronounced 'second spike' along the outer edge of the petal. The USDA Plants Database doesn't have this listed near Polk County, TN, where I photographed this specimen, and I don't have photographs of the rest of the plant, but I have a reasonably high level of confidence in that identificaiton.

This was photographed along the Big Frog Trail in Polk County, TN on May 30, 2004. I originally identified this as Silene virginica - Fire Pink, but in a recent review of photographs noticed the difference between these blossoms and some S. virginica I photographed near Lake Nottely, Georgia. S. virginica has narrower petals, and doesn't have the pronounced 'second spike' along the outer edge of the petal. The coloring isn't quite as deep as Fire Pink, either. This is, I think, S. rotundifolia - Roundleaf Catchfly.
